Third-country nationals planning to stay in Spain for more than 90 days within a 180-day period, whether for work, study, or residency, must obtain a national visa. This visa is also required for those coming to Spain for work even if the duration is under 90 days.
Citizens of the European Union, the European Economic Area, or Switzerland do not need a visa to live, work, or study long-term in Spain. However, they are required to register with the Union Citizens Register once in the country. Family members who have the right to free movement must apply for a residence permit. If a visa is needed based on their nationality, they must apply for a “Visa for Family Members of an EU Citizen.”
A national visa allows travel to Spain and short-term movement within the Schengen area for up to 90 days. However, it does not guarantee entry into the Schengen zone, as border authorities may refuse entry if all requirements are not met.
